In 1989, the cola wars were in full swing. Without reviewing Madonna's new video, Pepsi released a commercial of Madonna singing and dancing to "Like a Prayer."

"Like a Prayer" was released on MTV the day after the commercial debuted, and religious groups immediately threatened to boycott Pepsi products and fast-food chains that sold Pepsi. Pepsi pulled the plug on the commercial and withdrew its sponsorship of Madonna's next tour, but let Madonna keep her $5 million advance. The commercial aired twice.

A curious mix of pop and gospel, Like a Prayer was the first single Madonna had released in a year and a half. The video started a flood of debate - was it a mock of Christianity, or a picture of ethnic discrimination, rape and faith? Regardless, the video catapulted Madonna into the public eye, and shot Like a Prayer billboard spot #1. Did the Material Girl learn a lesson? Yes. Controversy = success.
